Hardness: Garnet is a relatively hard mineral with a hardness rating of 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. For example, almandine, pyrope, spessartine, and tsavorite are on the harder side while demantoid is a bit softer. While it is not as hard as diamonds, it's still durable enough for everyday wear, especially in pieces like engagement rings. With proper care and maintenance, your garnet ring can last for generations.

  • The Mohs scale is a measurement system used to assess and compare the hardness of minerals. Developed by Friedrich Mohs in 1812, it assigns a ranking from 1 to 10 to minerals based on their ability to scratch or be scratched by other minerals. This scale provides a simple and practical way to understand the relative hardness of different minerals, with 1 being the softest (e.g., talc) and 10 the hardest (e.g., diamond).

Color Range & Varieties:

  • Almandine: Almandine garnets are known for their deep red to reddish-brown colors. They are one of the most common and widely recognized garnet varieties.

  • Pyrope: Pyrope garnets are typically deep red, often with a hint of purple or purplish-red. They are valued for their intense red color and are sometimes referred to as "fire garnets" due to their fiery appearance.

  • Spessartine: Spessartine garnets range from orange to reddish-brown. They are named after the Spessart Mountains in Germany, where they were first discovered.

  • Grossular: Grossular garnets come in a wide range of colors, including green, yellow, brown, and even rarely in pink or colorless forms. The green varieties are often referred to as "tsavorite" when they exhibit a vivid green color. Grossular garnets are highly valued for their diverse color range.

  • Andradite: Andradite garnets are known for their green colors, but they can also occur in yellow, brown, or black varieties. Demantoid garnet, a green variety of andradite, is particularly prized for its vivid green color and high dispersion, which gives it exceptional brilliance.

  • Uvarovite: Uvarovite is a rare garnet variety that is primarily green. It is known for its vibrant, emerald-like green color. Uvarovite is typically found in small crystals and is less commonly used in jewelry due to its scarcity.

Origin: Garnets are mined in many countries around the world, including India, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, China, Russia, and the United States.

Stability: Garnets are stable to light and chemicals.

Treatments: Garnets may rarely be treated with fracture filling to improve clarity. When cleaning such treated stones, it's best to use only warm soapy water and avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, or steam cleaners, which can potentially damage the treatment. We disclose all treatments on our stones.

Spiritual Properties: Garnet is often associated with spiritual properties such as enhancing one's energy, passion, and courage. It's believed to stimulate the root chakra, promoting feelings of security and grounding. Garnet is also thought to help balance emotions, increase self-confidence, and inspire love and devotion. Some people use garnet for meditation and spiritual growth, viewing it as a stone that connects to the heart's desires and life purpose.
